Guerilla without a cause

August 13th, 2008 by Jon Clements

Plugging films isn’t really what this blog is about, but for Man on Wire I’ll make an exception.

The story of French tightrope walker, Philippe Petit’s high wire act between the rooftops of New York’s World Trade Center in 1974 has to be seen to be believed.

And it must rank as one of the greatest-ever pieces of unintentional guerilla PR. While us humble PR practitioners would be delighted with a hit in the Sun for a client stunt, Petit’s skyscraper shenanigans achieved worldwide media coverage. And the killer is, he did it for the fun of it!

Though not nearly as audacious as wire walking 110 storeys up (I mean, what could be?), our recent work using free runners to support the Nissan Qashqai Challenge in London feels like a direct descendent of guerilla tactics such as Petit’s. It certainly got the media talking.

I feel slightly freaked out just looking at the picture! - I’m not a big fan of heights.

Paul - likewise. Even sitting down watching it I felt slightly uncle dick.
