Rob Brown on Sarah Brown on Twitter

On Saturday BBC News invited Staniforth managing director and PR Media Blog contributor, Rob Brown to comment on how and why the Prime Minister’s wife, Sarah Brown, has soared to the height of Twitter followers, overtaking even Stephen Fry.

    Sarah is a bit of a bot magnet at the moment, Rob. If everyone in the numbers race cleaned accounts of nonsense followers there may be a slightly different outcome. That’s not said from quantity over quality standpoint, but from a reputational POV.

    If one is reported as having 3/4 million and a quarter or whatever of those don’t exist there is a credibility gap.

    I take the point about Sarah’s bot followers (although she’s not unique in that). I think Twitter needs to take the bot problem much more seriously. They are easy to spot http://prandtheweb.com/2009/08/07/how-to-spots-the-bots/ so effective scripts removing them from Twitter shouldn’t be difficult. As for the follower race @imogenheap is way ahead of both Fry and Brown (but with her fair share of bots too).

    Bots aside follower numbers are on the rise and it will be interesting to see the impact of twitter and other social media on the forthcoming general election campaign.
